[edit]

I could tell that someone was trying to do good work, not vandalism, and tried to salvage it, but your revert was really the right thing to do, I guess, and what I should have done. Thanks for understanding that I was, like you, only trying to make the article, and Wikipedia, better. Rlquall 02:43, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Boston Bees

[edit]

I have also seen some fairly-generally-authoritative sources (whether any qualify as MLB "official" I don't know) which state that for some period of time in the early 20th century the National League Boston team was officially (at least more or less) the "Bees". Somehow I never fully bought into this, thinking that more likely they were the "B's" much as the Philadelphia/Kansas City/Oakland Athletics were/are the "A's". Am I right about this to the best of your knowledge? Rlquall 02:49, 2 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I spent some time reading newspapers of the times, and came to the conclusion that names like "beaneaters" and "Bees" were used very informally by sportswriters of that time (like "Dirt Dogs" is now), and any given name could be used informally for either the National League and American League Boston teams. I saw "Beaneaters" (a nickname for Bostonians, at the time) used for both.
I saw no evidence that these names were used formally; all "official" info I saw (from that timeframe) used the terms "Nationals" or "Americans" to distinguish betweeen the 2 Boston teams. Even baseball cards from that time, and original negatives (with player/team etched in) from that time use Nationals or Americans.
Baseball writers appear to have a long tradition of repeating what other baseball writers have written. There's not a lot research based on original sources; they usually repeat tidbits picked up from other sportswriters. So "Beaneaters," though incorrect, gets passed through the generations. I'm guessing Bees is the same.

Herman Haupt

[edit]

Thanks for the excellent article on Herman Haupt. My initial interest came via his engineering work on the Hoosac Tunnel, and found your contributions on Haupt very informative. Econrad 01:10, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

My pleasure. You should read those 2 Gingrich books I cite. Even if you don't like his politics, they are very thought-provoking and about the only modern references to Haupt, even if fictional. Hal Jespersen 01:15, 13 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Dealing with editors with NPOV problems

[edit]

Its can be very frustrating working with editors who haven't learned about our NPOV policy or choose to ignore it, especially when they're blanking any discussion about the issue. The best thing you can do is have some patience, and don't let their editing get to you. Cardiff (talk · contribs) appears to have been noticed by a variety of different editors who have been warning him about blanking talk pages and using NPOV. Try giving him a few more tips on NPOV and if he's still completely avoiding the issue, blanking things and continuing to edit in a disruptive manner, I'm sure an admin will be happy to try blocking him for a short period to give him the hint. If a couple of short blocks don't work, the only option from there is really to start a user conduct RfC. Hope that helps -- let me know if there's anything more I can do. .:.Jareth.:. babelfish 14:15, 27 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Adam Ant

[edit]

Hello, I have been trying to separate the Adam Ant and Adam & the Ants articles. They used to have lots of overlapping and inconsistent information.

I noticed you added a lot of discography information back to both articles. I'd like to keep the Adam & the Ants discography on that page. Also, after your latest edits, the singles in Adam & the Ants are now listed twice in the same article: under the 'Singles' table, and again with your addition. I think the singles should be listed once, maybe in an expanded table. What do you think? Thanks!Econrad 13:32, 28 April 2006 (UTC)

Hi, yes I agree that's a good idea. I got disheartened when I saw that my updates had been cut and moved. Also some of it is total rubbish- Adam never got his name from AdamAnt lives!

I'm a long time Ant fan and a bit of an Ant experts- the discography i did off the top of my head!

Anyway I would like to contribute to this but i find it galling that anyone can come along and make stupid and / or wrong edits! I also am having a hard time working out exactly how wiki works, its not very user friendly!!

TOWN OF LONG ISLAND.com

[edit]

Is a publicly funded site. Therefor' all images are public domain images. The only images that probably are "questionable" were the car ferry, the freighter, and the summer home. Almost Famous 03:18, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The postcards are also public domain, no one specifically owns those pictures, although they sell them EVERYWHERE. Almost Famous 03:19, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
NOTE: Permission has been acquired for several of the images, however I've been denied permission for some of the images you've flagged. I've deleted the violation tag off the images that have been given permission. As well, I've marked the images that need to be deleted promptly. The townoflongisland.com website has granted all their images to be public domain, however, the LI General Store picture and the Maquoit II Freighter needs to be deleted, as does the summer home on LI. All old photographs, are without question in public domain, and the LI Graphic is now public domain. I will also change the license on them to read as such. I saw you deleted them from the articles. Thanks for the help. Almost Famous 06:42, 12 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Boston ballclubs

[edit]

Are you compiling all names for the teams that appeared in newspaper baseball talk? Beaneaters was used in the sense People from Boston, same as Hubbites or Hubites, clumsy coinage for People from "the Hub", itself a nickname for Boston. I have read baseball notes to the effect "Tuesday the Giants are here for three games and then we play the Hubbites", but this particular example is made up now. --P64 16:13, 5 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is a form message being sent to all WikiProject Disambiguation participants. I may have found your page based on your contributions or your link repair user box on your user page. If you are not a member, please consider including your name on the project page. I recently left a proposed banner idea on the WikiProject Disambiguation talk page and I would appreciate any input you could provide. Before it can be approved or denied, I would prefer a lot of feedback from multiple participants in the project. So if you have the time please join in the discussion to help improve the WikiProject. Keep up the good work in link repair and thanks for your time. Nehrams2020 22:55, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Prod tag

[edit]

I have added a "{{prod}}" template to the article Cleanse the Bacteria, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but I don't believe it satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and I've explained why in the deletion notice (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). Please either work to improve the article if the topic is worthy of inclusion in Wikipedia, or, if you disagree with the notice, discuss the issues at its talk page. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, but the article may still be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached, or if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria. Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:Paul Pena - New Train.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read carefully the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content and then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. WikiProject Ice Hockey August 2007 Newsletter

WikiProject Ice Hockey Newsletter

Dear Econrad! You are receiving this newsletter because you have signed up as a member of WikiProject Ice Hockey. The purpose of this newsletter is to update on the goings on of the project, as there have been major changes, and a lot of new recognized content in the past few weeks. If you are an inactive user, you probably won't recognize the new and improved state of the WikiProject!

From the project, Maxim.

New recognized content

By Maxim
There have been a lot more Good and Featured articles written in the past few weeks. Here is a list:[1][2][3][4]

Featured articles
Good articles
Featured lists[5]
Notes
  1. ^ All articles are in order of promotion, as written on the main WikiProject page; FA's have official dates of promotions.
  2. ^ A star represents a featured article or list
  3. ^ A green circle represents a good article
  4. ^ Stanley Cup is an A-Class article
  5. ^ The lists system differs from articles, and doesn't give an official date of promotion
Article Improvement

By Maxim

Upon some discussion on the WikiProject talk page, the Article Improvement Drive page was revamped by Krm500 and Maxim. It was renamed Wikipedia:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Article Improvement, and it includes two section. The first section is called articles in dire need of improvement. It list articles, usually important, that are in very poor shape. The second section is called requested help. Users list an article they request help improving a certain article, which will facilitate collaboration, which is the aim of any WikiProject. There is one article currently listed there, Henrik Lundqvist, here. The goal is to at least get it to Good article status.

Diacritics

By Maxim

In the past few weeks, there has been quite heated discussion about the use of diacritics in article name. The current guideline is using diacritics in the pages of articles of all player names which require them, but redirects are exempt.

Task forces

By Maxim
There have been two new task forces started within the WikiProject to coordinate major topics.

Sweden Ice Hockey task force

This task force was initiated by Krm500. Its current goal is to improve Henrik Lundqvist to Good or Featured article status. It covers all Swedish clubs, leagues and competitions and associated articles, players and coaches that are Swedish, or have played/coached for a Swedish club, and arenas in Sweden. They plan to eventually operate as a sort of a sub-project, which will have its own articles for creation, ranking importance and quality of articles, and co-ordinate article improvement. Its current members are Krm500, Bamsefar75, and CLAES.

New Jersey Devils task force

This task force was initiated by Bsroiaadn. Its goal is to improve New Jersey Devils to Featured Topic status. Although it currently meets the required article count, the task force wishes to improve it further. Its area of coverage is very similar to the Sweden Ice Hockey task force. Its members are Bsroiaadn, JHMM13, FutureNJGov, Sportskido8, Michael Greiner, JRWalko, and Soxrock.

Requested Images

By Maxim
After discussion on the WikiProject talk page, Serte created a page for Requested Images. The page encourages users to license images for use on articles. The page also has section to request images for players, arenas, game situations, miscellaneous, and team and league logos. The page has been quite popular; since it was created on July 21, there have been six completed requests. There are four currently outstanding requests:

Article assessement completed

By Maxim
On July 12, Kaiser matias announced that he had completed assessing all the articles with a {{ice hockey}} tag, sorting them into Category:Unassessed Ice Hockey articles. Kaiser matias has ranked about 9000 articles in that category, and most were stubs, and "have no information at all", according to him. Everybody is encouraged to expand the stubs into real articles. This effort took around 5 months. A big thanks goes to Kaiser matias from me and all the project.

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Siege-lp.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 14:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. cholmes75 (chit chat) 14:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Siege-lp.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Siege-lp.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. cholmes75 (chit chat) 14:39, 30 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Pushead

[edit]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Pushead, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Pushead seems to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Pushead, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. New recognized content

By Maxim

Especially due to the featured topic drive, there have been many new featured lists promoted concerning NHL awards. Here's the full list of all the 13 FL's promoted since the last newsletter.[1][2]

  1. Hart Memorial Trophy
  2. James Norris Memorial Trophy
  3. Vezina Trophy
  4. Conn Smythe Trophy
  5. Frank J. Selke Trophy
  6. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy
  7. Lester B. Pearson Award
  8. Calder Memorial Trophy
  9. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy
  10. King Clancy Memorial Trophy
  11. Jack Adams Award
  12. Presidents' Trophy
  13. List of Calgary Flames players

There have been no new good articles or featured articles. Maurice 'Rocket' Richard Trophy has been given A-Class status due to multiple issues raised at FLC.

  1. ^ The last one, List of Calgary Flames players, is the only one not associated with the featured topic drive.
  2. ^ At the time of publishing, there were 5 lists at WP:FLC and 2 lists in the "Holding cell", as there's been an accepted guideline to not put more that 5 trophy lists at the same time to, "compensate for the sanity of the reviewers".
Did You Know?

By Maxim
There have been 4 new articles featured in the Did You Know section? on the Main Page since August.

Featured Topic Drive

By Maxim

Started by User:Scorpion0422, the aim of this drive is to make NHL awards a featured topic. A featured topic is basically a set of very high quality articles (good articles and featured articles/lists). In this case, the topic is NHL awards. Many users have helped, including Scorpion0422, Resolute, Serte, Hasek is the best, Maxim, Croat Canuck, Spike Wilbury, FutureNJGov, and T Rex/Dinosaur puppy. The progress has been very good; there are 12 featured lists promoted, and 2 good articles:

  1. Hart Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  2. James Norris Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  3. Vezina Trophy (Scorpion)
  4. Conn Smythe Trophy (Serte)
  5. Frank J. Selke Trophy (FutureNJGov)
  6. Lady Byng Memorial Trophy (Scorpion)
  7. Lester B. Pearson Award (Scorpion)
  8. Calder Memorial Trophy (Croat Canuck)
  9. Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  10. King Clancy Memorial Trophy (Maxim)
  11. Jack Adams Award (Maxim)
  12. Presidents' Trophy (Scorpion)
  13. Stanley Cup (Earlier collaboration, very many involved)
  14. Traditions and anecdotes associated with the Stanley Cup (Maxim)

Check the project page if you are interested in helping out. Although it's closer to being done than not, there's still work to be done. The next topic that might be tackled is Stanley Cup, but this remains purely speculative and in discussion.

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Pretenders album.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:Pretenders album.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it might be deleted by adminstrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 16:26, 8 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have decided to put on a mini-contest within the November 2013 monthly disambiguation contest, on Saturday, November 23 (UTC). I will personally give a $20 Amazon.com gift card to the disambiguator who fixes the most links on that server-day (see the project page for details on scoring points). Since we are not geared up to do an automated count for that day, at 00:00, 23 November 2013 (UTC) (which is 7:00 PM on November 22, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the project page leaderboard. I will presume that anyone who is not already listed on the leaderboard has precisely nine edits. At 01:00, 24 November 2013 (UTC) (8:00 PM on November 23, EST), I'll take a screenshot of the leaderboard at that time (the extra hour is to give the board time to update), and I will determine from that who our winner is. I will credit links fixed by turning a WP:DABCONCEPT page into an article, but you'll have to let me know me that you did so. Here's to a fun contest. Note that according to the Daily Disambig, we currently have under 256,000 disambiguation links to be fixed. If everyone in the disambiguation link fixers category were to fix 500 links, we would have them all done - so aim high! Cheers! bd2412 T 02:21, 18 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed new draft for the Jon Baker page

[edit]

Hi Econrad, I hope this finds you well. I disclosed a conflict of interest here and shared a proposed rework of the page on music producer and hotelier Jon Baker in hopes of addressing the promotionalism tags and bringing the page more up-to-date. Per WP:COI, I haven’t made any edits, but am asking impartial editors to consider my work. I was wondering if you would be willing to review the draft I shared?
