shooting down passenger planes

Its interesting how reading widely can open up room for different opinion. Until today, I thought shooting down an airliner is the most logical thing to do when future airliner end up in the wrong hands. Then, I read this article. [1]

This sentence is what got my attention and made me think a bit. "The judge found that the law infringed the right to life and human dignity. Critics argued that the government had no right to kill those on the plane to try to save the lives of others."

It is an interesting observation. You are killing 300 people for sure to avoid a POSSIBILITY of another 300 people dying. To the terrorist, its a win win situation. That don't certainly sound logical to me. Sure one can argue that allowing the death of 300 or more in the ground will lead to lots of economic difficulties, but I can't see the market responding differently when an airliner is shot in the air. Oh, and don't say that allowing the events to take its course will lead to 600 (Those on ground + those on the plane), those on the plane are what MBA call Sunk cost and should not be taken in consideration when deciding the future. In another word, I can't see any gain.

On the other hand leaving the plane alone leave a possibility of a happy ending. What if it was the typical thugs that used to do the same crime previously? The airline will land and they will call out their demands. The machinary that used to exist before 9/11 will come into play etc

The way things are going in the world, I think we will start sentencing people to death because they are likely to kill. All those stuff about"beyond doubt" is being thrown out. If something looks odd, act, thinking is for morons. I really welcome a debate on this issue. I am even more interested with people who think shooting an airline is a good idea to critic my opinion. That is the only way I can learn.

Finally, is it possible to include a blob about shooting of airliners on the front page? Me think this was triggered by 9/11 and warrant mentioning there for sure —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.229.9.16 (talk • contribs)

I don't think one can compare a person holding a gun and pointing it at someone with a group of terrorists who are flying a plane. First of all, the trajectory is much slower with a plane and the consequences greater. The US military can scramble fighter jets that could have shot down the planes once the threat got to a point where anywhere the plane landed in NYC would have been devistating. I think that any of the people on either of the flights that hit those towers would have, if they could, told us to shoot the plane down rather than let their be a chance that the plane they were on would have caused so much death. If we are talking about a plane flying over rural pennsylvania, then the severity of a crash is a little different.

If you want to look at it from a betting perspective. The odds increased every second those planes got closer to the towers. At what point, if we take the human element out of it, does the president say, "I'll take those odds"? The president didn't sentence those people to death, the terrorists did. Instead of hundreds of days of hard labor and firemen being heroes, whats wrong with making the people who gave their lives for the good of national security heroes?

FUCK THIS BULLSHIT, Even if we were to make the gun/plane analogy, there comes a point when a police officer shoots a gunman that comes long before the potential killer pulls the trigger. If it is just the officer that is threatened, maybe it comes a little slower, but when innocent civilians are involved, that moment comes at the very second the opportunity arises. It isn't a fun job, and no police officer asks to be put in that position, but when duty calls, he or she HAS TO PULL THE TRIGGER. If not, we have two towers that look like mashed potatoes and a wing of the pentagon missing.

Maybe it is my own ability to come to terms with the inevitability of death or my tour in Afghanistan, but I like to be in control of my own death as much as possible. If there comes a day when a potential hazard can be subdued and will cost me my life, do it. I am but one man and all I can leave behind is a better tomorrow. Look how the people on the flight that crashed in PA fared. Heroes. Not like those who sat back and waited for the President to save them.
