independendent ionia

[edit]

Didn't Greece claim Izmir and its hinterland, not to make it independent but to make it part of Greece? Wasn't joining Ionia to Greece part of Megali Idea, which was being persuaded by Greeks at this time? Honestly, I believe the answer is yes, but maybe I am wrong. However, if I am right does it not follow that the plan was Ionia to be part of Greece? Ato

Sure, annexation to Greece was the original plan. But when the military situation seemed to make this impossible, the independence plan was an attempt at a compromise to prevent Ionia from returning to Turkish control. --Wik 20:15, Apr 24, 2004 (UTC)
Maybe this should be stated in the article clearly. However, this very much sounds like a smokescreen. Do you have any proof that the Greek intention had actually changed, and they would be content with an independent Ionia? That this was not a precursor for eventual joining to Greece? IMHO, later events, both in Anatolia in following years and in Cyprus decades later, suggest that Megali Idea is still favored by Greeks. Ato
Well, one can only speculate about Greek intentions, and that can be left to the reader. --Wik 00:03, Apr 25, 2004 (UTC)
OK, if you need to speculate, which one is closer to truth? Plan for independent Ionia, or its later joining with Greece? IMHO the one that is more likely, or both possibilities should be in the article.ato
No, the article doesn't need to speculate, it should just describe what the stated policy was. --Wik 03:08, Apr 25, 2004 (UTC)
