Documentation update

[edit]

Both name and id fields are required, even though going to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Colin%20Kapp redirects to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Colin_Kapp, because if a space is used in the template, [http://www.isfdb.org/wiki/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Colin Kapp Colin Kapp] becomes Kapp Colin Kapp. I'm asking on the Wikipedia helpdesk. grendel|khan 13:25, 2005 Mar 4 (UTC)

The name and id fields are no longer required when the pagename is the target. See Colin Kapp for an example, again. Since the canonical ISFDB name is Colin Kapp as well, the template is simply invoked as {{isfdb name}}. The template is, of course, backwards-compatible, and parameters may be filled in where they are needed---for instance, for a disambiguated author's name such as John Brunner (novelist) would have to use the full template invocation. grendel|khan 16:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Something's wrong. The link on Colin Kapp reads "Kapp Colin Kapp at the Internet Speculative Fiction Database", and links to http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?Colin . Checking further,

Publisher?

[edit]

Would it be worth having a similar template for publisher? (Emperor (talk) 13:12, 3 September 2009 (UTC))[reply]

It would be easy to add this with the template being most similar to the {{isfdb title}} template. However, there's a significant problem in that ISFDB has not come up with a system to regularize the publisher names. For example, someone may enter Ace, Ace Books, Ace Publications, Ace Science Fiction Books, etc. None of them are wrong and at the moment they are handled as separate "publishers" in ISFDB. Another complication are the Science Fiction Book Club (SFBC) books. They are manufactured by Doubleday but with the original publisher on the title page. For example, there are a number of "DAW Books" hardcover editions in the 1970s and 1980s. All of them are SFBC publications though may only mention the book club on the dust jacket. Do we classify these as "DAW Books", "DAW/SFBC", or "SFBC"? Thus there is still some thinking and then coding still to be done before ISFDB will be able to show full publisher bibliographies. --Marc Kupper|talk 06:52, 4 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata access edit request

[edit]

Can the current code:

[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?{{{1|{{{id|{{PAGENAMEE}}}}}}}} {{{2|{{{name|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}}}] at the [[Internet Speculative Fiction Database]]

Be changed to the following:

[http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/ea.cgi?{{{1|{{{id|{{#if:{{#property:P1233}}|{{#property:P1233}}|{{PAGENAMEE}}}}}}}}}} {{{2|{{{name|{{PAGENAME}}}}}}}}] at the [[Internet Speculative Fiction Database]]

Which will allow this template to access the P1233 property (ISFDB author ID) on Wikidata. The template could then populate the ID from Wikidata automatically, assuming the property exists on the connected data item. If the property does not exist, then the if statement will recognise that and use the current system of substituting the page name instead. Thanks, AdamBMorgan (talk) 21:29, 13 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not done: please make your requested changes to the template's sandbox first; see WP:TESTCASES. Also, please provide an example of a page on which this would have an effect. Jackmcbarn (talk) 01:46, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, done. The code is in the sandbox, which is live (in test mode) on the Greye La Spina article. It also has test cases but the Wikidata function will only work with an attached data item with the right statement (which Grey La Spina has). - AdamBMorgan (talk) 19:08, 14 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
