Fixes

[edit]

As with the Alan Dean Foster page, I have fixed the order of the general Commonwealth novels and the Flinx novels to match the chronological order given on his website. Emb021 18:38, 4 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Book

[edit]

Wasn't there also a book called 'Guide to the Commonwealth', that described the Humanx universe? Was this an official book or one of those unauthorised fan books? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.214.143.84 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 24 June 2006

never heard of it. Could be a game related work. There is a GURPS: Humanx. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Emb021 (talkcontribs) 19:18, 27 June 2006

Terminology

[edit]

"The Humanx Commonwealth is notable for its portrayal of a human-alien relationship that is not just mutually beneficial but actually makes both species better."

Isn't that the very definition of "mutually beneficial?" I haven't read the books, so I don't know, maybe there's a valid point here, but can we phrase it in a way that doesn't sound quite so redundant? Nerrolken (talk) 17:18, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Should there be side articles for things?

[edit]

List of Humanx Commonwealth planets already exist. Why not a List of Humanx Commonwealth notable species as well? And is the information better all together here, or would putting it in a side article allow it to grow larger with more content added over time? They are eliminating most articles and merging or redirecting the content here already. Dream Focus 01:27, 2 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead and made two new articles. A lot of stuff was deleted before I started copying information over to save it. [1] Anyone who knows about this series might want to discuss what to add over at the relevant side articles. List of Humanx Commonwealth characters List of Humanx Commonwealth planets List of Humanx Commonwealth races Dream Focus 01:41, 3 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Will someone familiar with the series, please look over the list of articles related to it, which were deleted. [2] The red links are articles that are no longer there, not even a redirect. Should any of that content be merged over to the list pages? If so, post here please. You just contact the closing administrator, and ask them to "userfy it". They restore a copy of the article, history and all, to your userpage, for you to work with, you able to look through the history, finding when it was longest, and copying all relevant content to the proper list article. Mergers

[edit]

I merged the characters to List of Humanx Commonwealth characters. I'm not sure what to do with the organizations. Should they go to character list, or be put here in the main article? Also does anyone object to me removing all the planet's from the main article, if they are already at the side article for that, List of Humanx Commonwealth planets? If so, just revert me, and please post why. Dream Focus 17:03, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In-universe tag

[edit]

This was removed with the statement that the article "says what it is, and then list the books and what races are in it". It still does all of this from the perspective of the universe itself. Right now there is no real-world analysis at all in the non-list part of the article. It would make sense to roll the list article in here, seeing as it's actually far worse off in that regard than this article is. If there's no opposition I'll merge the pages and work on cleanup. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 09:00, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What list are you talking about? There are several list articles, broken away from the main one to make it more readable. There is no way to fit all that information here properly, and mass deleting relevant information just to make it all fit is unacceptable. And I don't think you understand what an "in universe perspective" means. That would be writing the history as though it were a real life event. I don't see that happening here. Anyway, the races and planets were moved to their own articles, and fit quite well that way. You need an overview of what each notable race is, and then a link to where you can find more information about them. Dream Focus 11:06, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The aim is to proceed the same way as with Warcraft (series) - gradually the article will be transformed from primarily plot-based to primarily based on impact, reception, development and so on. Merging list of Humanx Commonwealth characters, list of Humanx Commonwealth planets and list of Humanx Commonwealth races here would be a good start; that would give us an article of around ~50k which provided comprehensive coverage and was unlikely to be deleted. As plot material is developed, it can eventually be split out again to a (referenced and out of universe) sub-article, as with Races and factions of Warcraft. I would prefer to avoid acrimonious AfDs if at all possible. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 12:15, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Its easier to read in side articles. All the information was merged after a dozen different AFDs, the characters, organizations, and planets all combined to a list, instead of being dozens of separate articles. I do believe if it was altogether, people would try to "trim it", thus deleting content. Best to preserve it in a side article, very easy to navigate to, and read. Do you have any references you've found for the series itself? Just reviews for the individual books is most likely out there. Warcraft is a series of popular games, one having ten million people pay to play it online every month. Its going to get coverage. The books in the series probably don't get as much though. As for plot material developing, no, that's for the individual book articles. With a series with this many books in it, and so much happening, you can't possible have the plot of all of them here. Just a brief mention of things would be a pointless spoiler. Anyone curious about what happens in any of the books, can click the link to read a plot summary in that article. Dream Focus 15:55, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That the books in the series do not receive much individual coverage suggests to me that covering them individually (even in list format) is not useful. My interest is not in making material which isn't sourced or written in an appropriate form for an encyclopedia "easy to read" so much as in taking those parts of it which can be sourced and written appropriately and turning them into an article. Whether individual parts of the current content are lost temporarily is unimportant; the material can be found in the revision history and re-added as it is sourced. Trying to turn the current content into a reasonable coverage of the subject while refusing to remove any detail from it is rather like trying to make furniture out of a tree without cutting it down. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 16:14, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You are not making any sense whatsoever. If people are interested in the series, thus the reason they would be coming to this article about it, they'd be interested in seeing a list of all the books. And there is no such thing is temporarily lost. When visiting an article, no one is going to read through every single edit history to find information which isn't on the main page. You do not need sources for every single sentence in every single article. Dream Focus 12:47, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Otoids

[edit]

Are the Otoids a major species, or just a minor one? Need to know if they believe under "major species", or "others". Also, the races have only a brief mention here, and a link to the main article for the races of the series. Dream Focus 15:35, 6 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is a confusing description of the Otoids in this article: "They are described as humanoid, roughly half the height of a human male, have ten fingers with three digits on each hand, covered in fur, green eyes and a non-prehensile hairless tail." "Ten fingers with three digits on each hand," doesn't make any sense. Is it supposed to be "ten hands with three digits on each hand"? 208.123.144.34 (talk) 22:53, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The description on the author's website reads: "Vaguely humanoid, about half as tall as a man. Full body fur except for the tail, which is bare. Each had has ten fingers, with three joints to each finger. The eyes reflect green." Deagol2 (talk) 23:05, 9 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that makes more sense, "joints" instead of "digits". Thanks Deagol2. 208.123.144.34 (talk) 08:19, 10 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Surfeit"

[edit]

I found this story at ISFDb, which says it is part of this series, but I don't know where to put it in the article. Maybe someone else does. Richard75 (talk) 19:02, 29 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
