Shouldn't all of the philosophers and writers go under Category:Ancient Romans ? --TOO 23:03, Jul 23, 2004 (UTC)
It depends upon the definition of ancient Roman. For example, many of the philosophers and writers were Greeks. However, if we define ancient Romans as subjects of the Roman republic and enmpire rather than citizens, then we could use the one category for all.
The ancient Roman category is already quite large. Adding additional references may make it less usable. GreatWhiteNortherner 00:35, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Culturally speaking, the Romans had rather little impact on the Greek part of the part of the world - their main role from the Greek point of view seems to have been as a source of funds for lecturers. :-) Would you really call some philosopher of the Academy "Roman" even if he wasn't a Roman citizen, had never met a Roman citizen, and didn't know Latin? I'd say if they were born and raised in a Greek part of the empire, spoke Greek natively, and adhered to Greek customs, that makes them Greeks and not Romans. Stan 06:02, 24 Jul 2004 (UTC)
I've added the full category tree for this category, so people can easily search the page for the proper category. If anyone thinks it should be structure differently, please make/suggest changes. — 0918 BRIAN • 2006-01-21 23:46
Good work, but it really isn't appropriate on the main page. It is totally non-standard and it relegates the subcategories themselves to the status of a foot note. I'm going to move it to this page and link it. Choalbaton 07:20, 23 January 2006 (UTC) [ reply ]
I see you restored a mini-version of the tree while I was putting the subcategories into alphabetical order in line with standard wikipedia practice (ie ignoring the words "Ancient" and "Rome"/"Roman". Now the two lists don't match. I really think it would be better to do without the table. It doesn't look good, it doesn't give much additional information, and it isn't clickable. Almost every other subject area does without such a chart. I think the way to go it to trust the category system and to get on with fully populating all the categories. I don't know much about Ancient Rome, but I've seen lots of categories, and this category is well behind most in getting its articles accurately categorised. Having all the articles in the right places is the way to make them accessible, not presenting people with a category tree, which frankly is going to make a lot of them run a mile. Choalbaton 07:39, 23 January 2006 (UTC) [ reply ]
This category is the root category for articles about ancient Rome . This is the default category for articles about ancient Rome which cannot be more finely categorized.
